The Macallan Diamonds Are Forever 55th Anniversary Release

The Macallan · HIghland Single Malt Scotch Whisky · 18 Years

An 18-year-old Scotch released in partnership with the James Bond franchise!

Nose

Soft, not fully malted barley, vanilla, sweet cocoa (more cocoa than bitter cacao). Light Sherry influence, lemon-forward citrus developing into lemon meringue. Notes of brioche and fresh-baked bread, a sweet orange. With a subtle cask presence overall.

Palate

Palate brings back lemon meringue immediately. Sweet citrus with a creamy edge. Slightly sulfuric Sherry note. Vanilla. Light earthiness. Savory note—beef tallow / rendered steak fat. Builds into candied spice—candied ginger, possibly candied allspice or clove.

Finish

Finish is dry, slightly astringent but not harsh. No real wine character despite initial impression—more oak-driven dryness. Short to mid length with lingering spice and faint citrus sweetness.

Back in late January my friends at The Macallan reached out and invited me to join them for “an evening of discovery” at their Los Angeles brand home, The Macallan Villa, where the dress code was “1970’s Cocktail Party”. When The Macallan invites you somewhere? You don’t say no; so when the day approached I donned my best 70’s adjacent attire and went on my way with my friend and colleague Tomas.

The invite was cryptic, it referred to the evening as “One where nothing is as it seems.” Which, of course, piqued my interest. Upon arrival we were greeted with the sight of two screen used vehicles from Diamonds are Forever. One of which was Blofeld’s Bath-O-Sub

Throughout the entire evening The Macallan team were very good about keeping the secret that we were there to celebrate the launch of the new Diamond’s Are Forever, though some eagle eyed attendees (yours truly included) figured that out early on.

Towards the close of the evening, attendees were treated to a speech by The Macallan’s Master Whisky Maker, Kirsteen Campbell, who talked about the inspiration for this release, the basis of which is a liquid distilled in 2007. The core of this liquid is matured in Sherry casks but there is a twist, Kirsteen included red wine casks as an intentional homage and tie-in to to Diamonds Are Forever and Bond’s knowledge of red wine saving his life in the film.

This is a truly exciting limited time release from The Macallan and I am humbled I was invited to attend and taste this liquid and meet Kirsteen Campbell.
